My name is Eric McNeal and I am a licensed architect in the state of Colorado and a LEED Accredited Professional, and I am the Principal of the architecture firm S7g Architecture.
The name S7g comes from the part of the nuclear power plant that Homer Simpson worked at – sector 7g. That might sound a little immature, but the name actually means a lot to me. When I was in my third year at Arizona State University I was taking a studio class that focused on ad-hoc architecture (essentially designing and creating architecture based on the available construction materials), in which the class was able to appropriate a good portion of the concrete form-work used by Antoine Predock’s Phoenix Science Museum. Because of the scale of the built projects the studio was broken up into teams of four or five people.
My project team included three of my very good friends – Scott, Mike, and Charlie. We were all completely dedicated to the studio project and spent a minimum of ten hours a day on the project. But we had one somewhat strict rule about when we worked on the project – we all agreed to go home at 6pm and we reconvened just after 9:30pm. The main reason for this was because in Phoenix at this time The Simpsons were on television every night at 6:30pm and 9pm. When we would get back together to work on the studio project we would spend the next hour talking about The Simpsons.
The name S7g is to help me remember that time being in school when I was completely filled with ambition and passion for architecture, and when architecture was still an ongoing experiment of learning and sharing ideas. And it is these traits that I will be fusing into every project I’m fortunate to work on as Principal of S7g Architecture.
