Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest

There are many things that are the epitome of architects, such as a black turtleneck and black-framed glasses. But the measuring stick for how much “architect-ness” a person exudes rests within the ability to sketch on a napkin. We architects are inspired by many things, so the ability to sketch upon a readily available medium to record an idea is a necessity. We live in a digital age where most architectural drawings are created on the computer (which is typically a very good thing), but this napkin-sketching ability is more than just merely drawing pretty pictures, it’s being able to spontaneously create a sketch that succinctly translates an ethereal idea into a tangible concept and have it understood by almost anyone.

Architectural Record has a contest that should make every architect salivate – a cocktail napkin sketch contest. All you need is a 5-inch square napkin and a pen. It’s free to enter the contest, and best of all the grand prize is a box of cocktail napkins with the winning sketch (thus the circle of life is complete).
